Belgian blue-veined cheese made from raw cow’s milk. Belgien The Catharinadal cheese works was awarded the Caseus Award 2009 for its Grevenbroecker Also called Achel blue, this mild creamy cheese is made from the raw milk of MRY (red pied) cows that feed on fresh grass and clover in the 20 hectares of pastures of the farm. The milk yield from red pied cows is lower than that from other dairy breeds, but the flavour is more subtle, resulting in a better tasting cheese. The quantities produced are limited, with only 16 cheeses made every week. Grevenbroecker is not pricked: its streaky blue marbled structure is natural and unique and results from the particular arrangement of the curd. Its taste becomes more pronounced as it matures.
